Island Time Kayaking

Casey’s view of the world

Excited about gardening

April18

New garden beds are half way there beneath our new trellis, so the kiwi has lots of room to grow and shield us from next door and hopefully produce lots of fruit. Since kiwi are not evergreen, we also got two new plants Akebia, which should be really interesting, apparently they are sweet with a "pleasant" taste but seedy like a pomegranate. I think they should be fun; we can introduce people to them by using them in breakfast. We will have to figure out what to use them in for breakfast though, perhaps juice, who knows!

Then for the first time I am growing mixed greens. Yes like lettuce! I can’t wait; I loved mixed green salad, especially with pears and balsamic vinaigrette and candied nuts. Oh and don’t forget the Gorgonzola Cheese!  YUMMY! I can’t wait, we planted pear trees, and I have a hazelnut bush, and mixed greens, oh and Walla Walla Sweet Onions, that will be a first too, and this year instead of one tomato plant we bough two, so with the onions and herbs (thyme, basil, rosemary, mint, sage, oregano, something else I can’t remember at the moment) I could make some mean salsas!  I think we are going to forgo the peppers this year, last year they didn’t go very well, I just don’t think we have enough hot sun for them.

We also got drip irrigation kits and a timer so we can irrigate the whole thing while we are gone and our innsitter won’t have to worry about a thing. I am hoping to come back from Australia and have stuff just going gangbusters! We still have to get some starts, like our butternut squash which didn’t go as well as last year and some flowers, but our garden beds are coming along very nicely and I love to get in there and do stuff!

Our worm farm is going well and we were working that into our new beds for the kiwi and akebia, and we need to re-setup our third compost bin, we used it when we did the rose garden and those roses are going crazy.  Already they have grown by leaps and bounds and the leaves look amazing.  I can’t wait until they bloom (red, white, dark pink, and off-white), they will be beautiful, and a plus…everything is organic.  I am really looking forward to the broccoli and cauliflower.  Last year the broccoli was so sweet, and the cauliflower turned purple!  We wondered if that was ok, but apparently it is, and it was delicious.

So many great things we can grow, and I am looking forward to all the "fruits of our labor"
